George Elmer Browne Painting - Garage Sale Find

Posted Wednesday, August 24 by CAG

Melissa wrote that she bought this original painting by George Elmer Browne, painted on panel, 13" x 10 1/2", in a garage sale and would like to know what it might be worth.

George Elmer Browne was a very popular American impressionist painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Massachusetts, he worked in both the US and Europe. He is represented in a number of museums including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY.

As to value, has extensive auction records for this artist, with a wide range of prices realized. For paintings of this size, the range is from $500-$2,000. If we throw out the highest and lowest (as possible auction anomalies) the remaining paintings are clustered in the $1,100 to $1,600 range. Other major factors affecting the price, besides size, are authenticity, condition, subject matter and quality. Even with the best of photographs these other factors are hard to judge. There appears to have been a label on the back, that is missing. So, the title, location and date are, for now, unknown. So, if Melissa paid a garage sale price, a likely auction value of $1,100 to $1,600 isn't too shabby.
