CHIPPENDALE BALL&CLAW CURIO BOOKCASE. IT WAS MADE IN ENGLAND AND WILL DATE TO THE EARLY 1900'S. SUPER FINE QUALITY. THE WOOD IS MAHOGANY AND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE TOP HAS A MINOR REPAIR

Could you give me an estimate of the value of this item?

Thank you,

As good as your photo is (and it is better than many I get), there are several things I am not certain about. It appears that there is glass in the sides of the cabinet as well as the front. This does not really affect the value, but would make it a curio cabinet and not a bookcase, although it could certainly be used for books.

It also appears that the glass in the doors seems slightly curved or bowed inward. If so, that is a good thing, as Martha would say. Curved glass curio cabinets generally sell for more than ones with straight glass. I am also assuming that the piece is about four feet tall.

Assuming the glass is curved and my size estimate is not too far off, this piece would sell in the Chicago area in the $500 to $700 range, depending on how "upscale" the area is. In Charleston, I believe the prices are likely to be a little higher, maybe 20-30% higher. If the glass in the doors is straight, I would estimate it at $350-$500 in Chicago.
